Tafsir of the Day

Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a) said: {I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. Surely he thought and calculated} (74:17-18) means that `Umar (l) had plotted against the walayat of the Commander of the Believers (a). He planned to dishonor the allegiance, after the Messenger of Allah (s) had left this world, that he (l) had paid to the Commander of the Believers (a) during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (s). He (a) said: {But may he be cursed, how he plotted. Again, may he be cursed how he plotted;} (74:19-20) means that `Umar (l) will be punished again and again by al-Mahdi (atfs). {Then he looked,} (74:21) He (a) said: This means that `Umar (l) looked at the Messenger of Allah (s) and the Commander of the Believers (a). {Then he frowned and scowled,} (74:22) He (a) said: He (`Umar) {frowned and scowled} because of what he was ordered: to pay allegiance to the Commander of the Believers (a). He (Imam al-Sadiq) said: {Then he turned back and was puffed up with pride, then he said: This is naught but sorcery of old} (74:23-24) refers to when `Umar (l) said: The Messenger of Allah (s) has bewitched the people with `Ali. {This is naught but the word of a mortal.} (74:25) He (a) said: This refers to when `Umar (l) said: Paying allegiance to `Ali was not revealed to Muhammad by Allah [rather, Muhammad simply made it up himself]. {I will cast him into hell.} (74:26) He (a) said: This refers to `Umar (l).

Tafsir al-Qummi, p. 395

Indeed, by Allah, verily the most beloved of my companions to me is the most devout of them and the most learned (afqah) of them and the most concealing of them with our hadith. And verily the worst of state of them with me and the most detestable of them to me is the one who when he hears the hadith that is attributed to us and narrated from us, but he does not understand it and his heart does not accept it, he abhors it and denies it, and declares kufr upon the one who professes by it, while he does not know perhaps the hadith has come out from us and (that) it sourced from us. So by that he is outside of our walayat.

—Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام, Sahih Basa’ir al-Darajat, H45.

remorsecode asked: I remember you condemned the Sufis before and are arguably worse than the Wahhabis, is that true and is it true Imam Ja'far condemned them? (a). If so why, what is it about them that is so bad?

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) and hence all of the Imams condemned them. The gist of their reasoning is because their religion is innovation by bringing in non-Islamic or anti-Islamic concepts and sources of “knowledge,” (such as what is commonly understood to be “irfan”), and they misguide many well-intentioned but ignorant people who are impressed by their apparent asceticism. The hadith I’m providing here I had to pull from online sources since I’m at work; however there are a number of similar ahadith present in al-Kafi as well, primarily in volumes 1, 2 and 8, although IIRC there may be some narrations to this effect in volume 3 as well.

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said, regarding the Sufis:They are our enemies, whoever turns toward them, so he is one of them and will be resurrected with them. There will be people who claim they love us but they are inclined towards them and they try to be like them, call themselves with their name (Sufi), and say what they say, whoever is inclined towards them he is not from us and we are innocent (bara’a) from him. And (as for) whoever rejects them and refutes them, he is as someone who performed Jihad against the disbelievers with the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his pure family). (Safinat al-Bihar, v. 2, p. 57)

Imam al-`Askari (peace be upon him), referring to the many deviant Shi`ah scholars we have today, said: Their scholars are the most evil of the creation of Allah on earth, because they incline towards philosophy and sufiism. By Allah! They are of the enemies, and (they are) people of distortion. They exaggerate in their love for our enemies [many of the so-called “companions,” the `Abbasids, etc.] and they misguide our Shi`ah and followers. (Safinat al-Bihar, v. 2, p. 58)

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) said: The Hour will not rise until a people come out from my Ummah, who are called Sufis. They are not from me and they are the Jews of my Ummah. They shave their heads for the dhikr and raise their voices with the dhikr, reckoning that they are from the righteous. And they are more misguided than the kuffar, and they are from the people of the Fire. They (will) have a braying like the braying of the donkey. (Radd `ala ‘l-Sufiyyah, Ch. 11)

Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him) said of them: Do not pay attention to these deceivers (the Sufis) for they are allies of the Shayateen and destroyers of the bases of religion. … Whoever goes to visit any of them alive or dead as if he goes to visit Shaytan and mushrikeen, and whoever supports any of them, as if he supported, Mu`awiyah, Yazid, and Abu Sufyan (may Allah curse them). (Hadiqat al-Shi`ah, p. 602).

It’s worth mentioning that the bigger threat today is really the Irfani “mystics” preaching from the minbar in Iran today, with abhorrent and heretical ideas (taken directly from the Sufis), the most notable of which is “wahdat al-wujud w’al-mawjud.”

Bayt al-Ahzan made available free online!

Al-Mubin.org has really outdone themselves, and made the first and only English translation of House of Sorrows (Bayt al-Ahzan) by the great scholar Shaykh Abbas al-Qummi (the compiler of Mafatih al-Jinan) freely available online!

If you follow my postings much, or read any of my other work, you will know that it is one of my most cited sources, because it is such a wellspring of knowledge about our Holy Lady, peace be upon her.

I strongly urge any lover of Aale Muhammad and Lady Fatimah to download and read it—in fact, I would go so far as to say it is virtually obligatory for any servant of the Ahlul Bayt to read and commit to memory the events laid out in this remarkable work.

Unfortunately the PDF copy they have provided has copy/paste disabled, but this is miniscule complaint compared to the extreme benefit the free provision of this text has made possible. May Allah reward them with His best rewards in this life and the next for this act of generosity and service to Mistress of the Women of All the Worlds, Fatimah al-Zahra’, peace and blessings be upon her.

As an added bonus, they have also made freely available a brief tafsir of Fatimah in the Qur’an by the same publisher. I have not read this particularly text, but given the publisher’s track record, I would imagine it’s probably quite good.

حديث الكساء - السيد جاسم الطويرجاوي - Hadith Al-Kisa (by khadimalhussain)

English translation of hadith al-khisa’:

One day, my father the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his Household, visited me, “Peace be upon you, O Fatimah!” he said.

“Peace be upon you, too.” I answered.

“I can feel some fatigue in my body,” he said to me, and I answered, “I pray Allah to protect you O father against fatigue.”

“Fatimah,” he ordered, “bring me the Yemeni cloak and cover me with it.”

I brought him the Yemeni cloak and covered him with it. I then kept on looking at his face, which was glittering like a moon at the night of its fullness and perfection.

No more than a while passed when my son al-Hasan came in, “Peace be upon you, mother!” he greeted.

“Peace be upon you, too, O delight of my eye and fruit of my heart!” I replied.

“O mother,” he said, “I can smell a pleasing scent as if it is the scent of my grandfather the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his Household.”

“Yes, it is,” I answered, “Your grandfather is now under the cloak.”

Al-Hasan moved towards the cloak and said, “Peace be upon you, O grandfather, Allah’s Messenger. Will you allow me to be with you under this cloak?”

My father replied, “Peace be upon you too, my son and director of my Pond. I allow you.”Al-Hasan then went under the cloak with his grandfather.

No more than another while passed before my son al-Husayn came in, “Peace be upon you, mother!” he greeted.

“Peace be upon you too, O my son, delight of my eye, and fruit of my heart,” I replied.

“O Mother,” he said, “I can smell a pleasing scent as if it is the scent of my grandfather the Messenger of Allah.”

“Yes,” I answered, “Your grandfather and your bother are under the cloak.”

Al-Husayn then approached towards the cloak and said, “Peace be upon you, O grandfather! Peace be upon you, O he whom Allah has chosen! Will you allow me to be with both of you under the cloak?”

My father replied, “Peace be upon you too, O my son and intercessor of my people. I allow you.”

Al-Husayn then went with them under the cloak.

At the same time, Abu’l-Hasan `Ali ibn AbuTalib came in, “Peace be upon you, daughter of Allah’s Messenger,” he greeted.

“Peace be upon you too, O Abu’l-Hasan and Commander of the Faithful,” I replied.

He then said, “Fatimah, I can smell a pleasing scent, as if it is the scent of my brother and cousin the Messenger of Allah.”

“Yes,” I answered, “He is there with your two sons under the cloak.”

`Ali moved towards the cloak and said, “Peace be upon you, O Allah’s Messenger! Will you allow me to be with you under the cloak?”

My father replied, “Peace be upon you too, O brother, successor, vicegerent, and bearer of my Pennon. I allow you.”`Ali thus went with them under the cloak.

I then came towards the cloak and said, “Peace be upon you father, O Allah’s Messenger. Will you allow me to be with you under the cloak?”

My father replied, “Peace be upon you too, my daughter and part of my flesh. I allow you.”   I thus went with them under the cloak.

When all of us sat under the cloak, my father the Messenger of Allah took hold of the two edges of the cloak with one hand, pointed to the sky with his right hand, and prayed, “O Allah! These are my true household, my unique people, and my kin. Their flesh is my flesh, their blood is my blood, whatever causes them pain causes me pain too, and whatever saddens them saddens me too. I am at war against whoever wages war against them, at peace with whoever is at peace with them, the enemy of whoever shows enmity towards them, and I love whoever loves them. They are part of me and I am part of them.

Therefore (please) shower on me and them Your blessings, benedictions, mercy, forgiveness, and pleasure; remove from them filth and purify them with thorough purifying.”

Meanwhile, Allah the Almighty and All-majestic said, “O My angels and inhabitants of My heavens! Verily, I have not created any well-established sky, extended land, glowing moon, shining sun, revolving planet, flowing ocean, or moving on ark except for the love of these five (individuals) who are now under the cloak.”

Gabriel the Honest Archangel asked, “O my Lord! Who are those under the cloak?”

The Almighty and All-majestic Lord answered, “They are the household of Prophethood and the core of the Message. They are namely Fatimah, her father, her husband, and her sons.”

“O my Lord,” Gabriel asked, “Will You allow me to descend to the earth to be the sixth of them?”

Allah the Almighty and All-majestic said, “Yes, I allow you.”

Gabriel the Honest Archangel descended, “Peace be upon you, O Allah’s Messenger!” he greeted, “The Most High and All-high (Lord) conveys to you His greeting, expresses His special greeting and honoring to you, and says, ‘By My Might and My Majesty I take this oath: I have not created any well-established sky, extended land, glowing moon, shining sun, revolving planet, flowing ocean, or moving on ark except for your sake and for your love.’ He has then allowed me to join you (under this cloak). Will you, O Allah’s Messenger, allow me?”

Allah’s Messenger said, “Peace be upon you, O trustee of Allah’s Revelations. Yes, I allow you.”

So, Gabriel joined us under the cloak. He thus said to my father, “Allah has revealed to you saying, ‘Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House, and to purify you a thorough purifying.’”

`Ali then said to my father, “O Allah’s Messenger! Please tell me; what is the value of this gathering of us under this cloak in the sight of Allah?”

The Prophet, peace be upon him and his Household, said, “I swear this by Him Who has sent me with the truth as Prophet and chosen me, as holding communion, to convey the Message; whenever the tale of this gathering of us is mentioned in an assembly of the people of the earth in which a group of our adherents and lover are present, the (divine) mercy shall certainly be poured down on them and the angels shall certainly surround them, asking forgiveness for them until they depart.”

`Ali, peace be upon him, commented, “Then, by Allah I swear it; we have won. So have our adherents. I swear it by the Lord of the Ka`bah.”

“O `Ali!” my father Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him and his Household, added, “I swear this by Him Who has sent me with the truth as Prophet and chosen me, as holding communion, to convey the Message; whenever the tale of this gathering of us is mentioned in an assembly of the people of the earth in which a group of our adherents and lover are present and among them there is a distressed one, Almighty Allah shall certainly release him from distress, or there is among them an aggrieved one, Almighty Allah shall certainly relieve him from grief, or there is among them one who needs a request to be granted, Almighty Allah shall certainly grant him his request.”

`Ali, peace be upon him, said, “Then, we have won and attained pleasure. I swear it by Allah. So have our adherents; they have won and attained pleasure in this world and in the Hereafter. I swear it by the Lord of the Ka`bah.”

The Maqtal of Fatimah al-Zahra’ (Her martyrdom in Shi`i narrations, part III)

What follows is the final episodes regarding the martyrdom of Sayyedah Fatimah, peace be upon her. It is quite long, and took a while to type up over the course of two days. Please excuse any errors, and insha’Allah it will be of some value to the brothers and sisters following this blog. Wa alaykum al-salam, wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Asma’ bint `Umays relates that: When the last days of Fatimah, peace be upon her, drew near, she told me: When Jibra’il came to the Prophetm, peace be upon him and his pure family, during his final moments, he brought along with him some camphor and the Prophet divided it into three parts. He kept one part for himself, the second for `Ali, peace be upon him, and the third one for me; and its weight was equal to four dirhams. Then she said: O Asma’! Bring that camphor which is kept at such place and keep it near my head. She said this and pulled her dress over her face and then said: Wait for some time and then call me, and if I do not answer you, know that I have been united with my father.

I have come to resent your word and detest your men. I have cast them away after testing them, despised them after examining them. Shame on the dull swords [these weak men], on the trifling after serious effort, the striking of rocks and the cracking of spears, the foolish judgements and mistaken desires. How bad are [the works] they have put forward! The wrath of Allah is upon them and in torment they will abide. Without doubt, they have put the noose around their own necks, I lay this burden on their shoulders, I thrust the shame of it upon them. May the unjust tribe be cut off, impotent and annihilated! Woe unto them!

—Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (AS) in her sermon against Abu Bakr, `Umar, `Ayeshah & Co. after their usurpation of Fadak.

`Ammara narrated: I asked Aba `Abdillah, peace be upon him, why Fatimah had been named al-Zahra’, to which he replied: Because when she stood for prayers in her prayer niche, her light would radiate for the dwellers of the skies just as the light of the stars radiates for the dwellers of the earth.

—Mizan al-Hikmah, H411.

Why do Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Lady Fatima in more than one occasion?

Fāṭimah al-Zahrā (peace be upon her) said: Firewood was brought to our house with the intention of burning it down along with its occupants. I was standing behind the door and was requesting the people to leave us alone, and for the people to defend us in the name of Allāh and His Prophet. ʿUmar (may Allāh curse him) took the whip of the emancipated slave of Abū Bakr, named Qunfudh, and hit my arms such that its mark remained upon it like the marks from a bracelet. Then he kicked at the door and pushed it towards me. I fell upon the ground face-down while I was pregnant. He (ʿUmar) took the fire and placed it near my face while hitting me with his hands, through which my earrings broke. Due to this attack, I felt the intense pains of labor take hold of me, and my child, Muḥsin, who was in my womb, was innocently martyred.

—Irshād al-Qulūb

The Story of Fadak in Shi`i sources, Part 2

The Usurpation of Fadak

`Allamah Abu Mansur al-Tabarsi in his book al-Ihtijaj, and `Ali ibn Ibrahim [al-Qummi, the mufassir], relate from Hammad ibn `Uthman who relate from Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq that when the swearing of allegiance to Abu Bakr concluded and his caliphate was established over the Muhajirin and Ansar, he sent his messenger to Fadak and told him to expel the deputy of Fatimah from there.

Shaykh Baha’ ad-Deen narrated in al-Kashkul from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله that he said: The Hour will not rise until a people come out from my Umma, who are called Sufis. They are not from me and they are the Jews of my Umma. They shave their heads for the dhikr and raise their voices with the dhikr, reckoning that they are from the righteous. And they are more misguided than the kuffar, and they are from the people of the Fire. They have a braying like the braying of the donkey.

—Shaykh Hurr al-`Amuli, Radd `ala ‘l-Sufiyya, Chapter on the Nullification of Sufi Dhikr

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The first judgment will be between Muhsin ibn `Ali (peace be upon him) and his killer, `Umar (may Allah curse him). Then he will be brought forth along with Qunfudh and they will be lashed with whips of fire. The whips will be such that if one of them hits the oceans, all of the oceans will boil from east to west and if (even one whip) touches the mountains, they will all melt and turn to ash. Then Amirul Mu’mineen (peace be upon him) will kneel in front of Allah so that Allah judges between him and Mu`awiyah (may Allah curse him). Thereafter, they (`Umar, Abu Bakr, Qunfudh and Mu`awiyah, may Allah curse all of them) will be thrown in a well (of fire) which will be covered so none can see them and they will not be able to see anyone. So those who followed them (in this life) will say: {O Our Lord, show us those two [Abu Bakr and `Umar] among the Jinn and men who had led us astray. We will trample them under our feet so that they may become of those who are the lowest}. Allah Almighty will reply: {It will not profit you on this day because you have oppressed, and you will be partners in chastisement}. This is when they will scream in distress and call for destruction. Abu Bakr and `Umar (may Allah curse both of them) will come to the pool (imprisoned) by the Keepers (of Hell) and will say to Amirul Mu’mineen (peace be upon him): Forgive us, give us some water, and save us. They will be told: {But when they shall see it near, grieved shall be the faces of those who disbelieve, and it shall be said (to them): {This is what you have asked for} by referring to yourselves as Commanders of the Believers! Return to Hell thirsty! You shall receive no drink but Hameem and Ghisleen and {the intercession of the intercessors shall not avail you}.
