Tafsir of the Day

Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a) said: {I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. Surely he thought and calculated} (74:17-18) means that `Umar (l) had plotted against the walayat of the Commander of the Believers (a). He planned to dishonor the allegiance, after the Messenger of Allah (s) had left this world, that he (l) had paid to the Commander of the Believers (a) during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (s). He (a) said: {But may he be cursed, how he plotted. Again, may he be cursed how he plotted;} (74:19-20) means that `Umar (l) will be punished again and again by al-Mahdi (atfs). {Then he looked,} (74:21) He (a) said: This means that `Umar (l) looked at the Messenger of Allah (s) and the Commander of the Believers (a). {Then he frowned and scowled,} (74:22) He (a) said: He (`Umar) {frowned and scowled} because of what he was ordered: to pay allegiance to the Commander of the Believers (a). He (Imam al-Sadiq) said: {Then he turned back and was puffed up with pride, then he said: This is naught but sorcery of old} (74:23-24) refers to when `Umar (l) said: The Messenger of Allah (s) has bewitched the people with `Ali. {This is naught but the word of a mortal.} (74:25) He (a) said: This refers to when `Umar (l) said: Paying allegiance to `Ali was not revealed to Muhammad by Allah [rather, Muhammad simply made it up himself]. {I will cast him into hell.} (74:26) He (a) said: This refers to `Umar (l).

Truth is found in death: Aisha, the enemy of the Prophet (s).

Surely Allah is He with Whom is the knowledge of the hour, and He sends down the rain and He knows what is in the wombs; and no one knows what he shall earn on the morrow; and no one knows in what land he shall die; surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

Tafsir of the day

As for those who believe and then disbelieve,
then believe [again] and then disbelieve
and then increase in disbelief,
Allah shall never forgive them,
nor shall He guide them to any way.
[Surat al-Nisa’, ‘Ayat 137]

Regarding His words: {As for those who believe and then disbelieve, then believe [again] and then disbelieve and then increase in disbelief}, it is narrated in Shaykh Kulayni’s al-Kafi that Imam al-Sadiq (ع) said: This ‘ayat has been revealed for those (first, second and third—that is: Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthman, ل) who had at first believed in the Prophet (until) when they were presented (at Ghadir Khumm) with the wilayat (guardianship and successorship) of Imam ʿAli (and) when the Prophet (ص) said: For whosoever I am his master, ʿAli is his master. At that time, those people and their hearts rejected it and (they) became disbelievers. Upon the Prophet’s order, they gave bayʿat [the oath of allegiance] to ʿAli (ع) and became (in name only) believers again, [but] after the Prophet’s demise, they did not stand by their pledge to ʿAli (ع) as ordered by the Prophet (ص). And instead, against the order of Allah, they themselves began to take bayʿat from the people (first for Abu Bakr at Saqifa and later upon the Prophet’s minbar; and, later, for the other two), hence Allah says: {Allah shall never forgive them, nor shall He guide them to any way}.

Bonus tafsir of the day!

He [it] is Who sent His Messenger
with the guidance
and the religion of truth,
that He may make it prevail
over all [other] religions,
even though the polytheists may detest it.
[Surat al-Bara’ah, ‘Ayat 33]

In volume 1 of Usul al-Kafi al-Shareef, the eminent traditionist Shaykh al-Kulayni narrated from ʿAli ibn Muhammad, from some of our companions [shorthand for a pre-specified chain of narrators used frequently by Sh. Kulayni throughout Usul al-Kafi and Furu’ al-Kafi], from ibn Mahboub, from Muhammad ibn Fudhail, who said: I asked Imam Kadhim (ع) about the verse: {He [it] is Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth}. Imam (ع) replied: (This ‘ayat refers to) the order of Allah and His Messenger (ص) about the wilayat (guardianship; in this case, that of ʿAli and the 11 other Infallible Imams, ع), and {religion of truth} is the wilayat. I asked: What does {that He may make it prevail over all other religions} mean? Imam (ع) replied: This [the meaning of these words] will apply [only later] at the time of the rising of al-Qa’im (ع), when the {religion of truth} will {prevail over all [other] religions}. 

Tafsir of the day

Indeed Allah enjoins justice and kindness,
and generosity towards relatives,
and He forbids indecency, wrong,
and aggression.
He advises you,
so that you may take admonition.
Fulfill Allah’s covenant when you pledge,
and do not break [your] oaths
after pledging them solemnly
and having made Allah a witness over yourselves.
Indeed Allah knows what you do.
Do not be like her who would undo her yarn,
breaking it up after [spinning it to] strength,
by making your oaths a means of [mutual] deceit
among yourselves,
so that one community may become more affluent [or numerous]
than another community.
Allah only tests you thereby,
and He will surely clarify for you
on the Day of Resurrection
what you used to differ about.
[Surat al-Nahl, ‘Ayaat 90-93]

Shaykh al-Bahrani reports in his al-Lawamʿi al-Nuraniyah ‘Asmaa’ ʿAli wa ‘Ahl Baytihi al-Qur’aaniyah that Imam al-Sadiq (ع) said, regarding His words: {Indeed Allah enjoins … and aggression}: ‘Justice’ is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and [that] Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ص). {Kindness} refers to Amirul Mo’mineen (ʿAli, ع). Whereas {indecency, wrong, and aggression} refer to ‘Fulan, Fulan, and Fulan’ (so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so; that is: Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthman, ل).

And he (Imam al-Sadiq, ع) said, in al-Kafi al-Shareef, Vol. 1, H. 757, regarding His words: {Fulfill Allah’s covenant … witness over yourselves} that this was revealed when ‘Jibt’ and ‘Taghut’ (Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, ل) questioned the Messenger of Allah (ع) at Ghadir when he ordered them to give bayʿat (the oath of allegiance) to ʿAli. They (ل) asked him (ص) if this order came from Allah or himself, to which he said: It is from Allah and His Messenger. Allah then revealed: {Do not be like her … what you used to differ about}. (The Imam then went on to explain that: {Allah only tests you thereby} refers to ʿAli and that {what you used to differ about} refers to the wilayat of Imam ʿAli, ع.)

And he (ع) also said, as reported by al-Bahrani, regarding His words: {Do not be like her … a means of [mutual] deceit}: The one {who undid her yarn, breaking it up after spinning it to strength} was ʿAyesha (ل), for she did break her oaths.

Tafsir of the day

The day when their faces are turned about in the Fire,
they will say,
‘We wish we had obeyed Allah
and obeyed the Apostle!’
And they will say,
‘Our Lord! We obeyed our leaders and elders,
and they led us astray from the way.
‘Our Lord!
Give them a double punishment
and curse them with a mighty curse.’
[Surat al-Ahzab, ‘Ayaat 66-68]

Concerning His words: {[Upon] the day when their faces are turned about in the Fire} ʿAli ibn Ibrahim [al-Qummi] related that he [Imam] (ع) said: It refers to those who usurped the claims of Muhammad’s household, so {they will say, ‘We wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Apostle!’} ‘They’ are the two men [Abu Bakr & ʿUmar, ل]. As for [i.e., out of] the shaykhs and the great ones, they were the first (two) to do wrong to them [Aale Muhammad, ع] and take over their due [the caliphate]. As for His words: {and they led us astray from the way} they [Abu Bakr & ʿUmar, ل] are talking about the way to the Garden, and [that] way is Amirul Mo’mineen (ع). They shall say: {Our Lord! Give them a double punishment and curse them with a mighty curse}.

Tafsir of the day

Say, ‘Tell me,
should your water sink down [into the ground],
who will bring you running water?’
[Surat al-Mulk, ‘Ayat 30]

The Prophet (ص) said: Allah Taʿalaa promised me that He will make 9 Imams emerge from the back of Husayn […] and the ninth one will disappear from the eyes of the people. This is the meaning of (this ‘ayat).

Imam al-Kadhim (ع) said: The ta’wil (inner meaning) of this ‘ayat is: What will you do when your Imam (atfs) is missed and you cannot see him? (Who then can have the knowledge of an Imam?)

Tafsir of the day

We did not send before you
any apostle or prophet
but that when he recited [the scripture]
Satan interjected [something] in his recitation.
Thereat Allah nullifies whatever Satan has interjected,
[and] then Allah confirms His signs,
and Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
That He may make what Satan has thrown in
a trial for those in whose hearts is a sickness
and those whose hearts have hardened.
Indeed the wrongdoers are steeped in extreme defiance.
That those who have been given knowledge may know
that it is the truth from your Lord,
and so they may have faith in it,
and their hearts may be humbled before Him.
Indeed Allah guides those who have faith
to a straight path.
Those who are faithless persist
in their doubt about it,
until the Hour overtakes them suddenly,
or they are overtaken by the punishment
of an inauspicious day.
[Surat al-Hajj, ‘Ayaat 52-55]

 From Shaykh Bahrani:

ʿAli ibn Ibrahim said: In respect to the meaning of the verse the Shiites reported the following account from Abu ʿAbullah (Imam Sadiq, ع): Once Rasulallah (ص) was afflicted with grinding poverty, so he came to a man of the Ansar and said to him: Do you have any food? He replied: Yes, indeed, ya Rasulallah (ص)! He slaughtered a young she-goat for him and broiled it. When he offered it to him, Rasulallah wished that ʿAli, Fatimah, al-Hasan and al-Husayn had been with him. Thereupon Abu Bakr (ل) and ʿUmar (ل) came, and then (at last) ʿAli came. So Allah revealed: We did not send before you any apostle or prophet but that when he recited [the scripture] Satan interjected [something] in his recitation—that is, Abu Bakr and ʿUmar. Thereat Allah nullifies whatever Satan has interjected—that is when ʿAli came following them—[and] then Allah confirms His signs—that is, through the help of Ameerul Mo’mineen ʿAli (ع). Then He said (revealed): That He may make what Satan has thrown in a trial (or: ‘interjects a temptation’)—that is, so-and-so and so-and-so (‘Fulan wa Fulan’: Abu Bakr & ʿUmar)—for those in whose hearts is a sickness—that is, doubt—and those whose hearts have hardened—that is, towards the straight Imam (ʿAli, the ‘straight path’). Then He said: Those who are faithless persist in their doubt about it—that is, doubt about Ameerul Mo’mineen (ع)—until the Hour overtakes them suddenly, or they are overtaken by the punishment of an inauspicious day. He (Imam Sadiq, ع) said: That (an ‘inauspicious’ or ‘disastrous’ day) is: such [a day] that has no likeness whatsoever.

Tafsir of the day

He said,
‘This is the path [leading] straight to Me.*
Indeed, as for My servants
you do not have any authority over them,
except or the perverse who follow you,
[Surat al-Hijr, ‘Ayaat 41-42]

It is reported from Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad, from his father, from his forefathers (ع), from ʿAli ibn al-Husayn (ع), who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab rose up to the Prophet and said: You never cease to say to ʿAli ibn Abi Talib: You are, in relation to me, as Harun is in relation to Musa. But Harun has been mentioned in the Qur’an [by name], in contrast [as opposed to] ʿAli! The Prophet said: O coarse one! O Bedouin! Have you not heard Allah say: This is ʿAli’s straight path?!*

*Note: Here is where the Arabic is important in order to fully understand what Rasulallah (ص) is saying to ʿUmar (ل): ‘ayat 41, hadha siratun ʿalaa mustaqim, ought to be read as: hadha siratun ʿaliyyun mustaqim—that is: This is a an exalted straight path, or more specifically to this context: This is ʿAli’s straight path. And this reading is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (ع) in Majmaʿ al-Bayan, in addition to at least 13 other authorities. For a similar instance of this, also see Surat Maryam, ‘ayat 50: And We give them (out of) Our Mercy, an conferred on them a worthy (or ‘truthful’) and lofty repute (wa jaʿlnaa lahum lisaana sidqin ʿaliyyan). This instance is somewhat different than the aforementioned in the sense that it more strongly indicates Amirul Mo’mineen, since grammatically the lack of waw between sidqin and ʿaliyyan means that, in this case, ʿaliyyan cannot be an adjective here. Thus, the more proper English rendering would be: And We give them (out of) Our Mercy [that is, Muhammad (ص)], and conferred on them a truthful ʿAli. There are other evidences for this reading, but insha’Allah, this will suffice for now.

I summon to Allah with insight
—I and he who follows me. …
[Surat Yusuf, ‘Ayat 108]

Al-ʿAyyashi (رح)  reported from Ismaʿil al-Juʿfi that he said: Abu Jaʿfar [Imam Baqir] (ع) said, with regard to His words: {Say: This is my way. I summon to Allah with insight—I and he who follows me}: (That is) ʿAli ibn Abi Talib in particular (exclusively), or else may Allah not provide me with Muhammad’s (ص) intercession. [Al-Burhan, v. 2, p. 275]
